Opening Day is Sunday!

A message from the Sheriff on the eve of opening day...
Opening Day is Sunday!

Sunday, September 1st, a day that many in our community wait on with great anticipation. It is the start of Bird season when many members of our community gather to go afield with friends, family and their dog and partake in an American Tradition.

September 1st is the opening day for Dove, Crow, and several other species of birds. Hunting is legal, the season begins one-half hour before the official sunrise and hunters can remain afield all day with the hunting day closing at sunset.

I want to remind hunters to be courteous to their neighbors or the property owners near where they will be hunting. Be mindful of where you are shooting, what you are shooting, where your shot is landing, and where your birds might land when shot. Do not trespass, be respectful of others’ rights and property boundaries, and always seek permission before going onto someone else's property.

In the excitement of being able to go hunting again make sure you are still making good safety decisions and following the rules of muzzle control. Do not let a good time get ruined because of a hunting accident.

Have a fun time, be safe, follow the rules and happy hunting! Take a kid or someone interested in learning about hunting with you, and introduce them to the traditions, ethics, and conservation efforts of sportsman.

If you live in the county or near the edge of the city where hunting will take place and you or your animals are sensitive to loud noises or gunfire, please take appropriate precautions for you and your animals.

Sheriff Richard Hickox
