Nevada Senate Democrats selected Senator Nicole Cannizzaro in September to serve as Senate Majority Leader for the fourth consecutive legislative session. Senator Cannizzaro, first elected as Majority Leader in 2019, is the first woman in Nevada history to hold the position and leads the nation's only female-majority legislature. She is now the longest-serving Senate Majority Leader in Nevada since Senator Bill Raggio’s tenure in 2007.
Cannizzaro represents Senate District 6 and has served in the Nevada Legislature since 2016. A graduate of Chaparral High School and the University of Nevada, Reno, she earned her law degree from the UNLV Boyd School of Law. Before her legislative career, she worked as a Deputy District Attorney in the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for over a decade.
“I am grateful that my colleagues have selected me to continue serving as their Majority Leader,” said Senator Cannizzaro. “Our focus remains on addressing the priorities of Nevadans, including affordable housing, access to health care, and ensuring our state’s resources are used effectively.”
Cannizzaro's tenure has included work on various legislative efforts, including education funding, health care access, and protections for vulnerable communities. In the coming weeks, she is expected to announce her leadership team, committee chairs, and assignments for the 2025 legislative session.
