The Mineral County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its investigation into the attempted murder that occurred on U.S. Highway 6 in Mineral County on Feb. 26, identifying the suspect as Christian Castellon of Panorama City, California. Authorities confirmed Castellon’s identity through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an attempted murder on Highway 39 in the San Gabriel Mountains on Feb. 26. The victim reported being approached by a light blue, 2000s-model Toyota Camry while operating a drone. A dark-complexioned male exited the vehicle and fired a gun. The victim was injured while taking defensive action. Deputies recovered spent casings and obtained images of the suspect and vehicle from the drone footage.

On Feb. 28 at 12:30 a.m., the Glendora Police Department stopped a light blue Toyota Camry without license plates. LASD deputies, aware of the Highway 39 incident, responded due to the vehicle’s similarity to the suspect’s car. As deputies arrived, the driver fled, leading to a brief pursuit before the vehicle was stopped.

During the stop, Castellon failed to comply with officers’ commands and appeared to manipulate an object inside the vehicle. He then raised a handgun to his head and fired. He was transported to a medical facility, where he was pronounced dead.

Castellon presented a California driver’s license to the Glendora officer during the traffic stop. The recovered firearm and spent casings from the Mineral County, Highway 39, and Glendora scenes were submitted for forensic analysis and entered into the NIBIN database. The analysis confirmed the same firearm was used in all three incidents. Investigators determined that Castellon had legally purchased the gun in Nampa, Idaho.
