Bank of America will award The Children’s Cabinet a $50,000 grant to advance economic mobility and build up underserved neighborhoods as the 2023 Neighborhood Champion® Northern Nevada awardee for their work. This $50,000 grant over the next two years will help expand the nonprofit’s programs and services that protect the safety of children and keep families together.
The Children’s Cabinet is dedicated to keeping children safe and families together by offering services and resources that address unmet needs. Entering its 40th anniversary, the organization helps more than 15,000 families annually and offers a variety of services, including basic needs, childcare resources, education, work experience programs, crisis intervention and family counseling at no charge to children and their families. This new grant funding will allow for The Children’s Cabinet to onboard a training and development coordinator to help maintain consistent messaging and increase the infrastructure of the organization.
"In our pursuit to keep children safe and families together, we are deeply honored to receive the Neighborhood Champion® award from Bank of America,” said Kim Young, CEO of The Children’s Cabinet. “This recognition and funding mark a pivotal moment for The Children's Cabinet, empowering us to expand our reach, enhance our services, and fortify our commitment to foster thriving communities. With this generous support, we can strategically plan for the long-term, ensuring sustained impact as we enter our 40th year of dedicated service. Together, we will continue to champion the well-being of children and families across Nevada."
At The Children's Cabinet, our mission is to keep children safe and families together. There is no wrong door, and we will ensure those who need us are provided with the proper resources regardless of their circumstances.
“We serve all of Nevada's children and their families, including those in rural communities, by providing programs and services at no charge to meet their needs. We support young children to young adults, so that they can thrive within their schools, their families, and their neighborhoods,” said Young.
Specific programs and services offered by The Children’s Cabinet in Nevada's rural communities include:
Safe @ Home
The Safe @ Home program offers comprehensive safety management, a range of supportive services, invaluable information and referrals, personalized wraparound case management, and proactive outreach initiatives to families referred to The Children’s Cabinet by the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS). Our goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of children while promoting the stability of their home environments, fostering a nurturing atmosphere where families can thrive.
Childcare Subsidy, Resource & Referral
The Children's Cabinet's Childcare Subsidy, Resource, and Referral Program serves as a vital resource hub for families in need of affordable and high-quality childcare options. The Children’s Cabinet is committed to ensuring that every child has access to safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate childcare environments. By providing financial assistance, resources, and support, we strive to strengthen families and promote the well-being of children in our community.
Parents As Teachers (PAT)
Parents as Teachers (PAT) is an evidence-based home visiting model with an emphasis on parent education. PAT is designed to support families with early childhood parent education, well-being, and school readiness, which serves parents with children ages prenatal through kindergarten.
Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS)
The Children’s Cabinet supports early learning centers throughout Nevada, including rural areas, through the Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) Coaching Program. This program supports licensed childcare providers in achieving a higher QRIS star rating with effective, on-site assistance to enhance knowledge, skills, practices, and environment.
Community Health Workers (CHW)
Community Health Workers (CHWs) serve as liaisons between the community and health and social service providers to better support Nevada families. CHWs facilitate access to services by addressing social determinants of health like housing and food security in order to improve overall health outcomes in a community. They are equipped with tools and education to provide brief interventions, offer non-traditional counseling, and share the appropriate health education and resources to ensure timely emotional/social support that is culturally appropriate for individuals and families facing challenges in accessing available health and social services. After identifying the needs of a family or individual, CHWs will offer resources, provide trainings, and connect families with pediatricians and telehealth providers.
Early Childhood Support Network (ECSN)
The Early Childhood Support Network (ECSN) program offers temporary, on-call substitute care to licensed childcare centers and family childcare homes. The goal of the program is to help facilities maintain quality childcare environments and appropriate child-adult ratios if they become sick, have sick staff, have staff that is on vacation, or are in the process of hiring.
